HIYA Toys Exquisite Mini's AVP Predators Youngblood, Temple Guard, Warrior Review

HIYA Toys Exquisite AVP Predators Review

Predator is the best franchise out there, am I correct?  Ok, I know a lot of the latest movies and designs haven't been the best, but the designs from AVP have really translated well into action figures. This review covers the second tier Predators Youngblood, Temple Guard, Warrior and the Unmasked Scar all from Aliens vs Predator. Now that they are finally in my hands, let's take a closer look at just how good Hiya did with this wave!

HIYA Toys Exquisite Mini's Alien Queen and Eggs Review

HIYA Toys Exquisite Queen Alien and Eggs Review

The Alien Queen is the best of the best of the xenomorphs and is not something you want to run into. It started with the Aliens movie in 1985 and expanded in the Dark Horse comics universe and other movies that would later follow.  One thing always was consistent, she was menacing and a force to be reckoned with!  Ripley faced one and in my opinion she only won out of pure luck, others faced them and generally a nuke was needed to finish off the job.  In Aliens vs Predator it took a human/predator team up to barely win the battle only later to find out the damage was already done. Scar was soon to give birth to a Predalien in the Predator mother ship.  Hiya toys is expanding and growing and their figures just get better and better.  Let's take a closer look at this beautiful figure and her eggs hoping we don't lose our lunch.

HIYA Toys Exquisite Mini's AVP Predator and Alien Figures Review

HIYA Toys Exquisite AVP Predator and Aliens Movie Figures

I've finally got the new Hiya Toys AVP Predators and Aliens in hand and they are awesome! I'm not a over the top fan of the AVP movie, but I really like the designs of the characters.  When you watch the movie there is something off with the Predators and their suits, but the figures look great and better then what we see on screen.  I thought the Alien design was very sleek and good looking in the movie so the figures naturally look great and are accurate.  Now that they are finally in my hands, let's take a closer look at just how good Hiya did with this wave!

NY Toy Fair 2018: NECA TOYS

NECA TOYS 2018 NY Toy Fair Walkthrough
For the fourth year in a row we had the pleasure of touring the NECA Toys booth at NY Toy Fair. This year Summer Mullins, Public Relations and Marketing Director, was kind enough to take time out of her busy day to show us around and talk about their upcoming products with us.

NECA TOYS Kenner Aliens Queen Facehugger

Kenner Aliens Queen Facehugger
NECA toys is really starting to go deep into our childhood toys in a great way.  In the 90's the Kenner Aliens, Predators, and Marines line was a huge hit and provided a ton of unique looks to these characters.  One of the craziest ones was the Alien Queen Facehugger that was a larger, uglier, creepier version of a regular Facehugger.  Based off of the Kenner storyline the Queen Facehugger can't plant Alien larva into a host but is there to defend the Queen eggs and sometimes uses its tail and legs to help hold down a host.  One of the things about the large Queen Facehugger, like other facehuggers, is it reminds me of a nasty spider, and I hate spiders…

NECA TOYS Toys R Us Exclusive AVP 2-Pack

 NECA
Celtic Predator vs Grid Alien
Go back and watch the fight scene in the Temple between the Celtic Predator and the Grid Alien. As I watched this scene I realized that even after 12 years it's an interesting fight with a surprising winner. The NECA versions of this battle put you right in the middle of this epic fight scene. From the Celtic's helmet getting scratched to the net being shot at the Alien before he pounces on the Predator. It all comes together in this sharp Toys R Us exclusive 2-pack that will be hitting shelves around November.

NECA TOYS ALIEN Foam Prop Replica Life-Size Facehugger

Life-Size Facehugger
One day recently I was sitting in my office when a surprise package arrived for me. I signed for it from the delivery man and flipped the box over. What did I see? The word ALIEN with a big Facehugger on the side of the box.

NECA TOYS Cinemachines Series 1 Review

NECA Cinemachines
Finally, we are getting highly detailed versions of great vehicles from iconic action movies of the past.  Who else but NECA would be the ones to come through for all of us fans!  The first series of Cinemachines is based off the movies ALIEN and ALIENS. This series brings us four different vehicles.  When we spoke to Randy Falk last summer I asked about the possibility of doing large vehicles for Aliens, Terminator, etc since they had already done the Predator Blade Fighter.  He responded with it being a possibility but in a smaller scale.  I wasn't too sure how I felt about the idea of vehicles in a smaller scale, but I was certainly curious about what NECA could do with it.

Fast forward to this February when we were able to meet with Randy at NY Toy Fair. That is when we actually got to hold these awesome vehicles in hand.   Yes, we all saw the pictures of what was to come, but pictures just don't do these justice. Once I had the Dropship in my hand and shot out the APC I knew they were cooler than any type of line like this before.  The detail of each piece was evident, and the weight/build of each was equally impressive.  Let's take a closer look at these amazing pieces so you can decide where you want to display them!

NECA TOYS AVP Grid and Warrior Alien Review

AVP
Grid and Warrior Aliens

When you think about an Alien fighting a Predator most people will think that the Predator wins hands down.  In a true one on one battle this could be the case, but the Aliens in AVP show nothing is certain.  In the movie, one of the last things you start to see are the Aliens attacking humans and Predators.  At this point in the movie it looks as if the Xenos are truly the best.  The GRID Alien picks apart two Predators before finally being taken out by the Scar Predator.  We will cut the Predators some slack as this was their chance to prove themselves by defeating a Xenomorph.  Let's take a closer look at NECA's GRID and Warrior Aliens from the movie Alien vs Predator.

NECA TOYS ALIEN Concept Figure Review

Translucent Prototype Xenomorph Suit

Although it never made it to the movie, the first Xenomorph (Big Chap) from the original ALIEN movie was supposed to be translucent so that you could see its inner workings. However, due to several unsuccessful attempts to make a translucent Xeno suit the color of it was changed to the dark colored version that we all know and love. The backstory about this is fascinating. If you have the time and the desire to learn more and see pictures of the original prototype suit then head over to the Strange Shapes blog. There are two articles in particular on this topic which you can find here and here. If you are a fan of the ALIEN franchise then you will want to give them a look.

NECA ALIEN Ripley Jumpsuit Figure Review

Jumpsuit Ripley

This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.

"In space, no one can hear you scream....."

This is the figure that all ALIEN fans have been waiting for for such a long time. It is awesome to know that Randy Falk doesn't give up easily, and that he will aggressively pursue and try all avenues in order to get a figure made. If I were Sigourney Weaver I would be ecstatic about these figures. The sculpt and likeness is amazing.

Packaging:

Jumpsuit Ripley comes in the standard ALIEN packaging that we are all accustomed to. The front shows the figure with the accompanying accessories and the back shows the other figures that are also available in this wave.

NECA Alien Ripley Compression Suit Figure Review

Alien
Compression Suit Ripley

Alien is a great movie that really started the trend for many Sci-Fi movies to come.  I can remember watching it in the 80's, as a very confused kid with a huge imagination.  At that time I believed something like this existed, just like the Predator.  Not all the movies I watched as a kid gave me this feeling, but Alien surely was one I had nightmares about.  The thought of the unknown is such a curious thing. There are no limitations to the imagniation when watching a movie like this. The compression suits work very well in this movie, and gave a distinct feel to the movie.  Are you ready to put on the suit and find out about Ripley?

Packaging:

The packaging is done well and continues with the Alien(s) theme NECA uses for their figures.  All of the Alien figures from Series 4 are very appealing to look at just in the package...you choose which looks the best.  The alien egg art is always striking when I look at it...that feeling of what if I was wearing the compression suit and walking around these eggs, no thanks!

Figure:

The Compression Suit Ripley has very nice paint apps and sculpt to the figure.  The compression suits are all similar with Kane, Ripley and Dallas with nice color variation that brings you right into the movie.  Ripley's suit is mostly white with some nice highlights of grey and off white to give it more dimension and detail.  She also has the marking on the suit just like in the movie to keep that authentic look.  She moves well with ease and has a very nice face sculpt that NECA should be proud of!

Accessories:

Ripley comes with helmet, gun with 2 different muzzle tips on it just like in the movie...it's your choice.  The head needs to be removed in order to get the helmet on Ripley.  I tried a few different ways to put the helmet on with no luck and didn't want to break any pieces forcing it on.  The best thing to do is pull her head off and then place the helmet pieces and head back on.   This was a very simple process that will keep you from damaging your figure. Let's not forget the awesome Jonesy the cat, which is a great sculpt itself.

Overall:

Alien is a classic movie which was an absolute must to have figures created for it.  NECA has really brought all of this to life with 4 figures (2 Ripley's) and the Big Chap to recreate all of that horror and suspense the movie brings.  The figure poses well and stands out next to a lot of my other figures. I really think all 3 figures from series 4 are terrific figures that are made well with no real issues that I have experienced.  One can only wonder what wonderful Aliens things NECA has in store for us in the future!

How Randy Falk and NECA Toys Keep Collecting Fresh and Fun

NECA Toys and Randy Falk

NECA Toys is the best toy company in the market today.  Is this our opinion? Yes, but it's also an opinion that is growing strong with a lot of other collectors.  I have been collecting for the majority of my life and until just a few years ago I was only collecting vintage items.  The newer collectibles being made just didn't match up to all of the great things I had as a kid.  I have worked hard to build and complete so many vintage collections over the past 10 years, but I wasn't giving the new stuff a chance.  I made a trip to TRU one day and came across a few NECA predators that I had never seen before.  I generally wasn't picking up these items because the crappy company McFarlane was ruining all of them with these toilet squatting poses that I just didn't want (that's besides the fact that Todd McFarlane is kind of a dick, but that's a story for another day). So, on that day I picked up my first ever Predator figure from NECA which happened to be the V1 Elder.

Why did it take so long for me to realize there were better items being made?  Maybe I was so focused on hoarding as much GI JOE items as I could that didn't focus on much else.  At this point, I didn't really know anyone else that was into collecting like I am, and I wasn't getting many other opinions.  Shortly after, I started buying every single Predator being made by NECA, and then it was the Aliens, Terminator, etc. NECA's products literally brought me out of the vintage age and suddenly gave me something new to look forward to.  At the same time, one of my closest friends, Jon, (who co-runs our site and Twitter page) had a strong, growing interest in collectibles.  He pulled all of his old toys out of his attic and I helped organize all of these wonderful hidden treasures he had stored away.

Fast forward a year, Jon and I build our website and start using Twitter every day to talk toys with all of these amazing people.  At the same time we were literally buying everything NECA was putting out because we loved it so much (I have 5 ED-209's).  So the perfect storm happens where we are in love with a company's products and also have the opportunity to talk to the product developer of NECA, Randy Falk, through Twitter.  We were able to ask this incredibly polite stranger about the products they were developing and what his opinions were on vintage toys as well.  I know...so many of you reading this have the same chance to talk to him… but isn't that a great thing?  Think about your daily work day...and all the stress and time management, etc that goes into it just to make it through the day and actually try to enjoy it as well.  The majority of us use Twitter, and we also know how crazy/active that can be at times. It can hard to try to keep up with all the great conversations going on...it's really tough. Now, think about Randy. He is working 'round the clock, but still makes time to connect with all of us.  Kudos to Randy! You are a true Road Warrior when it comes to this.

Randy is extremely busy working so many angles as Product Developer for a major toy company.  That being said, here he is responding to our questions, Tweeting out sneak peeks that we all want to see, and even doing great contests and giveaways (which encourages us to play with our toys)!  Now, yes, we love NECA's amazing lines and the great things to come (and when I say great, I mean GREAT), but Randy's added connection to it really builds to the love Jon and I (and many others) have for the company.  He is a very laid back and intelligent person who once was a school teacher but followed his true passion that many of us have...the love of toys and collectibles.

Since then we have had the chance to hang out with Randy and the NECA Toys crew a few times. That has allowed us to get a real up close and personal look at the business and how decisions are made.  Once you get the chance to see the NECA crew in action you really get to see how all of the amazing things they create get done.  Randy is extremely busy, but he always finds a way to make the time to connect with his fans.  We recently drove up to NY to see a screening of the original Predator at the Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers. Randy was there with an awesome setup of Predators and was giving away figures that weren't even released yet!  Now, Jon and I went because we were never lucky enough to see Predator on the big screen (we were only young bucks at the time), but it was an added bonus for all of the people there to have a chance to talk to Randy himself.  It was very cool to watch this little kid bring his own NECA Predator figure and take a picture with Randy. He won't admit it, but we all think he is the best in the business, and we are extremely lucky to have him. He takes that extra step and relates to people. He isn't just some corporate stiff giving a bunch of non-answers.

I guess after reading a few paragraphs of this you are wondering what is the point of all of this?  My point is to continue to share the stories we have with the huge community of collectors we are all a part of. We are regular guys with regular jobs who love toys...just like many of you. Our goal is to be real and authentic...that's why we just like to be ourselves. We value the personal interaction with all of you. It's fun to share stories and have conversations with other like-minded people. We like to joke around and have fun at the same time. You won't see us using over the top, fake, obnoxious voices when doing reviews. There is no need for us to put on a front and come up with a fake persona when reviewing toys. What you see is what you get when it comes to us. Thankfully, you guys seem to like us and accept us as we are which is awesome!

Randy has been able to take all that love we have and add to it with all the information and feedback he shares with us fans.  Name another company that gives you the same personal interaction and covers social media the way he does…. good luck.  Now, with Randy opening himself up like this there is a small amount of vocal of haters and complainers about things NECA does.  I guess there will always be a percentage of people that feel this way. Nothing is ever  good enough for them, but that's just the Internet in general. With that said, sit back for a minute and think about everything NECA has done.  Randy is spearheading all of this, and not only that, he is making things bigger and better every single day.  Other toys companies should take notice to what he does. If they don't then NECA is going to keep moving right past them.  Yes, Hasbro, Mattel, and the major toy companies give us rehashed vintage figures that we most likely want...but damn, a lot of them suck!

Listen, a lot of us collect a lot of different things and will continue to do so.  Yes, NECA will most likely not be able to make a lot of the figures we want for one reason or another...mostly because of licensing issues and profitability among other things.  This is not the fault of Randy or NECA. It's just the name of the game.  People are so quick to forget that they are running a business. If you can't sell anything then you can't bring in the revenue to take risks on new, cool things. Without sales, there is no business...no NECA Toys. So, give them a break and use your brain the next time you complain about not having a Johnny 5 figure!

Randy has mentioned many ideas to us, and what he has planned for the future. His vision and what he has in store for all of us is amazing!  We are not homers here. We are just genuine NECA fans that realize the quickly growing potential of what NECA is doing in the collectible world.  Bottom line is be thankful we have a bright mind like Randy. He has to make a lot of tough decisions to give us what we want.  Remember, they can only make a certain amount of figures a year and only have so much funds allowed for new tooling each year. That doesn't stop Randy from sticking to his vision and planning out all their awesome lines for years to come.

Thank you NECA Toys and Randy Falk for truly making collecting exciting and giving us that feeling of anticipation of what is coming next.

If you don't already, follow @neca_toys and check out all of the awesome things that they do every day.

And as always, feel free to chat with us any time on Twitter: @cobrashadowjoes

Snow Day!

There's no better way to kill some time and have some fun on a snow day than to take the toys outside...just like the old days!
